power-related incident, learn more
about the process.

Damage Claims Form

Power outages can happen unexpectedly for many reasons. At Pelican Energy TCI (PETCI), we work hard to provide reliable electricity, but occasional outages or electrical issues may occur.

When PETCI Is Liable

Our damage claim process is governed by the Turks and Caicos Electricity Ordinance. Pelican Energy TCI is not responsible for any injury or damage to any person or property caused by:

  • Unavoidable accidents
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Overloading due to unauthorized electrical connections
  • Necessary maintenance or operational requirements
  • Faults in any electrical plant not supplied by Pelican Energy TCI

Pelican Energy TCI may only be liable if the damage was caused by negligence or faulty equipment provided by us.

When Claims Are Not Eligible

Claims cannot be reimbursed if outages are caused by factors beyond our control, such as:

  • Wear and Tear
  • Weather events and acts of nature (e.g., hurricanes)
  • Third-party incidents (e.g., vehicle hitting power lines)

Our claims process also reviews the type of service that was originally approved at your address. For example, if a single-phase meter was approved for one unit but is powering multiple units, the claim may be denied.

Protecting Your Property

We know how much you rely on electricity every day. While we work hard to keep your power on, sometimes unexpected issues such as bad weather, technical problems and unforeseen events, can cause outages.

Customers are responsible for protecting their property and appliances. We recommend ensuring proper grounding, using surge protection devices, and other safety measures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Claims must be submitted within 10 days of the incident.

  • Complete the Damage Claim Form with detailed information about the incident.
  • Attach repair or replacement quotes for similar appliances or equipment.

Your claim will be investigated through:

  • A review of any outages reported on the date of the incident.
If a PETCI team was dispatched, a fault report will be completed outlining their findings.
  • A site visit by a Pelican Energy team member to inspect the damaged items and assess the property.
During the inspection, the technician will:
    Test the service grounding
Review the service type, electrical connections, and meter can condition
  • Grounding for home wiring is a safety system that connects parts of your electrical setup to the earth. This is done using a grounding wire that runs from your electrical panel or outlets to a ground rod or other approved grounding point outside your home.
  • It helps protect people, appliances, and equipment from power surges, such as those caused by lightning or voltage spikes. It provides a safe path for excess to flow into the ground instead of damaging your home.
  • The grounding system should be checked periodically.
  • According to the National Electric Code, a good ground reading ranges between 1 and 25 ohms, with readings closest to 1 ohm being ideal.
  • The property owner is responsible for ensuring the electrical system meets grounding standards.
  • Ensure your property has proper grounding, typically installed by a licensed electrician. The TCI Planning Department maintains a list of certified professionals.
  • Install surge protection devices for added safety.
  • We review the original approved service application. For example, if a single-phase meter was approved for a residential unit but is found supplying power to a commercial space (e.g., a shop), the claim may be denied.

As outlined in Section 19(3) of the TCI Electricity Ordinance, PETCI is not liable for damages caused by:

  • Normal wear and tear
  • Weather-related events or other acts of nature
  • Third-party incidents, such as vehicular accidents affecting electrical infrastructure
  • Approved claims are reimbursed based on the repair or replacement value of the damaged equipment.
  • No. Claims must be submitted by the registered Pelican Energy account holder. Any approved reimbursement will be issued directly to that account holder.
