Working Near Power Lines

Underground utility lines and overhead power lines carry highvoltage electricity. Striking a buried line with heavy equipment, or hitting overhead lines with high loads can cause:

  • Serious injury or death
  • Major power outages
  • Thousands in repair and service costs
  • Delays to your project and disruptions to your community

Most incidents occur while oversized heavy machinery or equipment is being operated or transported. If your equipment becomes energized:

  • Anything touching the equipment will also be energized.
  • Often, it’s co-workers who get hurt, not the operator.
  • Electricity can arc from the wire to the equipment, especially at high voltages.

Step 1: Submit Your Clearance Request

If your work involves:

  • Digging, trenching, excavation or any other ground disturbance within 18 feet (5.5 meters) of an underground energized power line, or
  • Moving or operating a high load within 13 feet (4 meters) of an overhead power line,

You’ll need clearance. If you are in doubt, contact us to verify.

Step 2: On-Site Meeting & Safety Check

After you submit your request:

  • A Pelican Energy TCI representative will meet you at the work site.
  • Together, we’ll review your project details and identify any safety risks like nearby poles, wires, underground cables, or easements.
  • Our hazard assessment will also include the location of workers, equipment, materials and methods that will be used near the energized line or equipment.

This helps ensure your team and Pelican Energy TCI’s infrastructure stay safe.

Step 3: Safety Approval & Permit Issuance

Based on the site visit:

  • Pelican Energy TCI will decide if your work can safely proceed within the required clearance, mark safe zones for digging and coordinate safety measures for overhead lines.
  • If approved, you’ll receive your clearance. A sketch or circuit drawing may accompany requests involving larger projects.

Step 4: Field Monitoring and Compliance

If required:

  • A Pelican Energy TCI field representative will monitor high-risk digs or overhead moves to ensure safety protocols are followed.
